Quick Answer

To redact a PDF free with no sign up, open imageandpdf.com/pdf/redact, draw black boxes over the names, numbers, or text you want gone, then apply the redaction so it is flattened out of the file. The hidden content is removed, not just covered, so it cannot be copied or recovered. No watermark, no account.

Redaction vs. just drawing a black box (this matters)

The single biggest mistake people make with PDFs is covering sensitive text with a black rectangle and assuming it is gone. It is not. A box drawn as an annotation floats on top of the page — the original text still sits underneath it. Anyone who opens the file can select the area and copy the hidden words, delete the box, or run a text search and read straight through it. There have been real, embarrassing leaks of court filings and corporate documents caused by exactly this.

True redaction is different. It does not just hide the content visually; it removes the underlying text and image data for that region and flattens the result. After redaction, the characters no longer exist in the file. Copy-paste returns nothing, search finds nothing, and there is no layer to peel away. When you genuinely need to protect a name, an address, an account number, or a salary, this is the only safe approach.

How to redact a PDF online — free, no sign up

The fastest way needs no software. The ImageAndPDF Redact PDF tool lets you mark areas and then permanently burn them out:

  1. Go to imageandpdf.com/pdf/redact
  2. Drag your PDF onto the page, or click Select file
  3. Draw a black box over each piece of text or image you want to remove, on every page
  4. Click Apply — the marked regions are flattened so the content underneath is gone
  5. Click Download — a clean PDF with no watermark and no account

Because it runs in your browser, it works the same on Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, iPhone, and Android. There is no sign-up wall and no per-file paywall.

What you should redact

Before you send a document outside your team, scan it for anything that identifies a person or an account. Common things worth redacting:

  • Personal identifiers — full names, home addresses, dates of birth, national ID numbers
  • Financial details — bank account and card numbers, salaries, account balances
  • Contact data — phone numbers, personal email addresses, signatures
  • Confidential business info — pricing, client names, internal notes in the margins

Do not forget headers, footers, and footnotes — sensitive data hides there more often than people expect.

Don't forget the metadata

Redaction removes the visible text you mark, but a PDF can also carry invisible baggage: the author's name, the software that made it, creation and edit timestamps, and sometimes earlier revisions. If you are releasing a document publicly or to an opposing party, strip that too. After you finish redacting, run the file through Remove Metadata (or Flatten PDF) so nothing leaks through the document properties.

A safe redaction checklist

  • Mark every instance — search the document so you do not miss a repeated name or number
  • Apply and flatten the redaction; never rely on a box you can still move or delete
  • Reopen the finished PDF and try to select the redacted area — you should get nothing
  • Strip metadata before sharing
  • Keep an unredacted master copy somewhere safe, in case you need the original later

Frequently asked questions

How do I redact a PDF for free?

Open the Redact PDF tool, upload your PDF, draw boxes over the text to hide, and apply the redaction so the content is removed. Then download. It runs in your browser, needs no sign up, and adds no watermark.

Is drawing a black box over text safe?

No — not on its own. An un-applied box is just an annotation with the original text still underneath. It can be moved, deleted, or copied through. Only an applied, flattened redaction actually removes the content.

Can redacted text be recovered?

Not if it was redacted properly. Once applied and flattened, the original characters are gone from the file, so copy-paste and search return nothing.

Does redaction remove hidden metadata?

It removes the visible text you mark, but not document metadata. Run the file through Remove Metadata afterward for a clean release.
