Questions & answers

Everything you might need to know before using the tool.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?+
YouTube recommends 1280×720 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio. The maximum file size is 2 MB and supported formats are JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP. Most creators use JPG for the smaller file size.
Will my thumbnail look blurry if I resize a smaller image?+
If your original image is smaller than 1280×720, upscaling may reduce sharpness. For best results, start with an image at least 1280px wide. If your image is larger, downscaling always produces a sharp result.
Can I add text to my thumbnail here?+
This tool resizes the image dimensions. To add text overlay to your thumbnail, use the Add Text to Image tool after resizing, or use a design app like Canva for text-heavy thumbnail designs.
Does YouTube compress my thumbnail after upload?+
Yes. YouTube re-encodes all thumbnails on their servers. Uploading at the full 1280×720 ensures the compressed version is still sharp. Uploading at a lower resolution gives YouTube less detail to work with.
