What is Change Text Color?
Changing text color in a PDF without the original source file requires a true PDF editor, not just a viewer. Our tool lets you select any text block on a PDF page and apply a new fill color, from black to any custom hex value. Because the edit targets the PDF's actual text objects rather than rasterizing the page, the output remains a fully selectable, searchable text PDF, not a flat image.
Why use this tool?
Edits the actual PDF text layer rather than painting a colored rectangle over it. Output remains text-searchable and screen-reader accessible. Supports any color via hex picker or named colors. Works on single text objects, paragraphs, or page-wide selections. All processing is client-side: documents with sensitive content stay on your device.
Common use cases
Common use cases include highlighting section headings with a brand color, changing footnotes or captions to gray to de-emphasize them, correcting a color chosen in the original design tool, or marking up a draft with color-coded revisions without returning to the source file.

Frequently asked questions
- Does changing text color preserve text searchability?
- Yes. The tool edits the color property of the PDF's text objects without rasterizing them. The text remains fully selectable and searchable in Acrobat, Chrome, and Preview. Screen readers can still read the content. The only change is the visible color of the rendered characters.
- Can I change the color of all text on a page at once?
- Yes. Use the "Select All" option to target every text element on the current page and apply a single color to all of them simultaneously. This is useful for converting a dark-themed PDF to black text for printing.
- What if the PDF has text embedded as images?
- Scanned PDFs or PDFs where text was rasterized as images cannot have their text color changed through this tool because there are no text objects to edit. You would need to OCR the document first to create a text layer, then apply color changes. Use our OCR PDF tool to convert image-based text to real text.
- Can I use any color, or am I limited to presets?
- You can use any color. The color picker supports the full RGB spectrum via hex input (#FF5733), named colors (red, navy, gray), and an interactive color wheel. This lets you match exact brand colors or any specific design requirement.
- Will the background color of text boxes be affected?
- No. This tool changes only the text fill color (the color of the characters themselves). The background or highlight color of any text box is a separate property and is not modified. Use the highlight tool in the Edit PDF section to change backgrounds.
- Is there a limit on how many text elements I can recolor?
- No. You can recolor as many text elements as needed in a single session. The tool processes all changes in one pass when you export, so editing many elements adds no extra processing time.
