Frequently asked questions
- What metadata can I see?
- Dimensions, file size, format, color space, bit depth, and if available: camera make/model, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, GPS coordinates, and creation date.
- Can I see the GPS coordinates of where a photo was taken?
- Yes, if the photo was taken on a device with location services enabled and the location was written into the EXIF data. The tool displays latitude and longitude. Note that sharing a photo with GPS metadata publicly reveals the shooting location: use our Remove Metadata tool to strip GPS data before publishing.
- Why do some images show no EXIF data?
- Several common reasons: the image was a screenshot (screenshots contain no camera metadata); the photo was downloaded from a social network (most platforms strip EXIF on upload); the image was edited and saved in a tool that discards metadata; or the image is a PNG (PNG does not support EXIF natively, though some tools embed it in custom chunks).
- Is the image uploaded to a server for analysis?
- No. Metadata is read entirely in your browser using the JavaScript File API and an EXIF parsing library. Your image never leaves your device. The analysis is instant because no network round-trip is involved.
- Can I edit or remove the metadata?
- This tool is read-only: it displays metadata but does not modify it. To remove metadata (strip GPS, author, camera info before publishing), use our Remove Metadata tool, which zeroes out all EXIF fields and produces a clean image.
- What image formats are supported?
- JPG and HEIC have the richest EXIF support (camera settings, GPS, timestamps). PNG supports limited metadata via text chunks. WebP supports basic Exif data. TIFF supports full EXIF. BMP and GIF contain no standardised metadata.
